About Wildlife of India
India, the Home of Taj, Temples, Tigers, Tombs, Tandoori and Tendulkar. Also India is commonly known as the Spiritual Capital of the World. In all the above mentioned popular aspects, one of them still has life, has a soul, has expressions, he is the king of predators, the Tiger. Albeit having a wide range of flora and fauna available in various biodiversity hotspots.

The Tiger being and integral part of this bio diversity is by far one of the most majestic and charismatic felines this country has to offer in its natural habitat. It's a long story that dates back to the year 1973, when the "Project Tiger Scheme" came into being. This was a central government initiative to ensure a viable population of tigers in India for scientific, economic , aesthetic , cultural and ecological values and to preserve for all time, areas of biological importance as a natural heritage for the benefit, education and enjoyment of the people. Initially, the Project started with 9 tiger reserves, covering an area of 16,339 sq.km., with a population of 268 tigers. At present there are 27 tiger reserves covering an area of 37761 sq.km., with a population of 1498 tigers. This amounts to almost 1.14% of the total geographical area of the country. Jeep safaris are conducted in all these National Parks for visitors to view this cat in action hunting or taking that afternoon siesta!

The Tiger is the quintessential spirit of the Indian Jungle, the symbol of India is wilderness & its National Heritage Species for the simple reason that The Tiger happens to be our National Animal. Even his distinct roar, or an alarm call of some animal announcing his presence , charges the whole environment of the jungle with excitement or panic amongst the animals.

Today the Tiger is at a very crucial phase of existence in this creation. He has been fighting a losing battle against a whole lot of people over the decades, Kings, Hunters, Fashion Industry, Poachers, and finally it is the pressure on its habitat which might not leave a home for the Tiger to live in. Unfortunate, but true that our National Animal has been on the receiving end for over 50 years. Had it not been for the initiative of certain individuals like Shri Kailash Sankhla, Shri Fateh Singh Rathore, Shri Ranjith Singh, who started the Project Tiger, which brought some relief to the tiring Tiger. Subsequently Mr Valmik Thapar, and a few individuals have tried relentlessly to save this majestic King of the Indian Jungle. They with a determined will have managed to create awareness quite successfully about the Himalayan effort required to save the Tiger. It is time more people join the movement. Call it plain and simple chutzpah or whatever you want to but the way this resplendent beast conducts itself in its natural habitat is nothing but nonchalant! Festooned in his signature stripes there is nothing but an aura of sheer grandeur in his moves.
